finding a safe therapist, dangers of therapy
This is guide only. It is not
official or legal advice. Clients should also use common sense.
- Ensure the therapist is qualified to
recognised standards
- Ensure the therapist is registered and
held by codes of conduct and ethics
- Ensure the therapist has full professional
insurance cover for what is proposed
- Ensure you feel safe with the therapist as
a person
- Ensure confidentiality is not an issue,
your therapist may have to disclose what is told to them
- Is the building and environment safe
- If you feel side effects from therapy,
such as feeling tearful all the time, tell your
therapist, DO NOT cease therapy and run away because of
the pain. You need support and professional help if this
happens. It may actually signify you reaching a stage in
your development which is painful but positive in the
long term.
- When first meeting a therapist, take all
the precautions you would take before meeting any new
professional, ensure someone knows where you are etc.
- CHECK credentials, ask for evidence.
