General Safety in Therapy

safety in therapy, safe hypnosis in Cardiff, Safe hypnotherapy in Cardiff, finding a safe therapist, dangers of therapy

This is guide only. It is not official or legal advice. Clients should also use common sense.

  • Ensure the therapist is qualified to recognised standards
  • Ensure the therapist is registered and held by codes of conduct and ethics
  • Ensure the therapist has full professional insurance cover for what is proposed
  • Ensure you feel safe with the therapist as a person
  • Ensure confidentiality is not an issue, your therapist may have to disclose what is told to them
  • Is the building and environment safe
  • If you feel side effects from therapy, such as feeling tearful all the time, tell your therapist, DO NOT cease therapy and run away because of the pain. You need support and professional help if this happens. It may actually signify you reaching a stage in your development which is painful but positive in the long term.
  • When first meeting a therapist, take all the precautions you would take before meeting any new professional, ensure someone knows where you are etc.
  • CHECK credentials, ask for evidence.

  • Always make an official complaint is abused, assaulted of if you suffer malpractice, and seek legal advice.
  • Never use complementary health as a substitute for medical attention.
  • Always seek medical attention for injury or illness.
  • Do not be fooled by claims that are too good to be true.
  • Beware of organisations like the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy, whose members are largely unaccredited (80% of their members un-assessed according to their own figures).
  • Do not use hypnosis products in circumstances where getting sleepy is dangerous (e.g. driving)
  • Ensure your therapist done some background assessment into your case before "getting started"
  • Do not be afraid to ask if you have any questions !!!
  • Beware of therapists who are not really therapists - always check credentials
  • Particularly beware of "life Coaches" who have not completed professional therapy training, but only weekend "coach" courses.
  • Be aware that most therapists have not got nationally accredited qualifications
(does not mean they are not professional or good practitioners however, most are)
  • Look for external accreditation: e.g. Recognised university degrees, NVQ awards, Royal Society accreditation.
  • Read the pages on qualification and Hypnotherapy   !
